I have been thinking about how I should start this and how to explain why I'm doing it and I'm still not sure. I'm not a blogger or a fashionista (ew at that word) but I charity shop well and think people should be more open to it. I could make out that it started because I wanted to stop fast fashion but I only found out what that was half an hour ago and I buy my underwear from Primark. I think we throw our money away to easily and we forget about what's important but you will have to bear with me while I try to articulate what I believe that to be because I find I'm constantly contradicting myself. To try and explain, I see 3 camps. On one side we have the wasters, the perfect consumer who by all means, mean no harm but will throw their teddy out the pram for next month’s newer model. On the other we have those who are so set on saving the planet they are hateful to anyone online who still has a plastic toilet brush. Then there are the ME’s of it all, I’m just trying to live my life, reduce my waste and save some money but I would be lying if I said I was always armed with a bag for life and everything I own is second hand.
There is also the Charity factor, this is by far the best bit. You buy nice clothes but at the same time you’re giving money to charity, isn't that just brilliant. It's cosmic, you can't feel bad for spending too much money on clothes but there is a catch. In order for this wonderful cycle to continue for ever more you need to replenish the stores. I'd recommend taking your old things twice a year at least which in turn means you free up space to then go out and restock. Now from my research done on fast fashion (albeit not extensive), I take that to be a win for us and a giant middle finger to the metaphorical man.
SO anyway, to round it up I charity shop because:
1) It's cheaper, no beating around the bush. If I want something on trend I give myself an afternoon and nine times out of ten find something similar if not better for a fraction of the price.
2) Unless they have a deal with some high street shop you don't get the same thing twice (which can also be a good thing, will go into more detail at a later date)
3) It's like sticking it to the 'man', don't give your hard-earned cash to the corporate bastards. Boycott them, give it to the Charities so they can do good.
